Fiber to Fabric – Weaving Banarasi Georgettes

Writer's picture: Asha GautamAsha Gautam

A very general presumption is that textiles and chiffons and georgettes are woven via machine fabrics and it is not the right picture. Putting all the details together on handloom on creating these georgette saris and dupattas from Banaras.

In this city, chiffon and georgette are mostly used by the weavers in the yarns of the loom. As we all know, Georgette is a high twisted yarn that has a crinkly surface. It is a soft texture that comes with the S&Z that are both wrapped and wefted. Chiffon gives a closer look at the georgette and can be used as an alternative yarn as well.

Handloom Weaving

It is an apparatus/equipment at the weavers used to create the end output in the form of textiles such as saree, lehenga, Dupatta, fabric, etc. Hence, the sari is known as a handloom georgette or handloom tusser, or silk.

After this, this beautiful yarn is used as a 3-ply georgette yarn which is later wefted and used for Katan in the warp. The result that comes out is of beautiful 90 grams georgette fabric which is relatively great for a saree. If we use georgette in both of the weft and wrap procedures, we can attain 70-gram fabric which later comes as a light-weighted saree.

The Katan warp and georgette weft saree are what is normally seen in all the good stores and you can also see that in Asha Gautam’s store. Most of these have Kadhwa weaving 70 g that can mostly be seen in dupatta and the cutwork sarees which are much lighter in weight and are often worn for grandeur purposes.

Did you know? When the georgette saree is wounded, it is crafted out of a crinkly yarn which looks almost equal to organza or Kora, a very stiff texture. It is used and processed that is held in the weaving process and becomes very soft and difficult to process the loom. The saris are however born in white and more Yaan texture. It is initially processed in hot boiling water such that it can remove all the coming and makes it a bit sore after dying and polishing the surface.
